This reminded me of some of the things Gunter Hampel used to do: something to do with the mixture of vibraphone (Woody Schabata) and bass clarinet (Clemens Salesny), but with bassist Raphael Preuschl and guest trumpeter Herbert Joos thrown into the mix. There’s a bright, fanfare-like quality to the opening, but it soon gets more reflective. The composed pieces tend to work better than the Improvs, which are too brief to establish much of a presence before they’re gone again. Impeccable unison playing on the themes, but with no hint of dryness, and Schabata’s unexpected tinkles under the bass clarinet on “Tahmine” are almost comically lightweight: akin to snowflakes dancing round a boulder.
